Mohawk haircuts originated with the Mohawk tribe -- one of the five founding nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. Throughout the years, mohawks became popular in other cultures. In the mid 1960s, mohawks were common in youth subcultures, and later, they were adopted by the punk subcultures of the '80s and '90s. They can still be seen in various styles today.
Recently, the mohawk hit the hallways of Richwood High School. The school's senior football players all agreed to get mohawks for their last game of the season.
Jeremy Flanagan was the first to start the trend because he made a bet involving the 'do. After that, the other seniors decided to support their teammate. Mary Fox, Jon Rader's mother, shaved all the boys' heads the night before the game.
"All of us seniors got together at Jon Rader's house and decided we would do something different and get a mohawk for our last game," said cornerback Jeffrey Sigley.
Not everyone thought the mohawks were a good idea, though. Some parents were upset that they had to walk their son in for senior night with him sporting a mohawk.
Dustin Vance said, "My parents were mad, but they said, 'It's just hair; it will grow back.' They thought it was nice that us boys got together to do something memorable for our last game."
After seeing those guys with their Mohawks, other students and members of the football team got them, too. Senior Justin O'Dell was one of those students.
"I just did it because everyone else was doing it," he admitted.
By the way, the Lumberjacks won their last game.
