Get back to nature at Blackwater Falls
By Beth Belcher

Over the summer, I had the pleasure of visiting Blackwater Falls State Park in Tucker County. My family and I stayed at the park's lodge, which had comfortable beds and nice pillows. The service at the lodge was also excellent. Everyone who worked there was so friendly. Plus, the lodge restaurant had delicious food at reasonable prices. We visited a few hiking trails near the lodge that gave splendid views of the gorge and falls. There was the cutest bridge over a small set of falls on one of the many hiking trails. It was so relaxing to get away from the busyness of life and enjoy the serene surroundings. Nature has no rushing, pending deadlines or lists of things to accomplish. There is no hurry; you can sit and enjoy the splendid view for as long as you please. Also, the park has signs identifying various types of flora and fauna, and it is not uncommon to see wildlife around the lodge. While I was there, I saw a groundhog, several deer, birds (including hawks) and squirrels. The Blackwater Falls themselves are gorgeous. You do have to walk down the 219 steps of a quaint wooden stairway to get the best possible view, but it is well worth it to see the gorgeous view offered at the bottom. The water cascading down the falls seems almost magical. Personally, I could have sat there all day enjoying the peaceful surroundings and listening to the relaxing sound of the falls. Country Critters, located about five minutes from the lodge, offers horseback riding (even for inexperienced riders) and a petting zoo. It has gentle, well-trained horses for you to ride, and a guide is with you the whole time. It is an excellent way to see the beautiful forest. Plus, it is just a whole lot of fun. I loved every minute of my ride, even though my horse kept trying to turn around to go back to the barn or stopping all the sudden to eat. All together, it was a great, enjoyable trip not too far from home. I definitely recommend Blackwater Falls State Park if you are looking for a quiet, private getaway or a quick, uninterrupted weekend retreat. With great hospitality, great food and a wonderful nature experience, it's got everything that you could ask for.
