As senior superlatives go, this year's batch at Charleston Catholic High School had its fair share of surprises, but definitely not among them was best-dressed senior girl Jessica Wahi, who has achieved a level of personal style and chicness that most high school girls can only dream of.

She chatted with FlipSide about what makes her style so unique.

Q: How would you define your style?

A: I don't try to dress the same as everyone else. I do what I think is unique and don't necessarily follow trends. I go out of town a lot and get clothes from all over, especially from Miami. I usually dress up more than I have to because I like to look nice and professional. I think it's really important to be comfortable in your own style.

Q: It is clear that you have become something of a style icon at Charleston Catholic. Who is your style icon?

A: I don't have just one. I really like Jessica Alba's style and Stacey London from "What Not to Wear's" style. I love Nina Garcia and Heidi Klum on "Project Runway." They all look very fashion-forward but not overly revealing.

Q: How do you feel about the uniforms that students at your school have to wear?

A: I like the uniforms. They make everyone feel equal and make it very easy to get dressed in the morning. At the same time, though, I feel like we should personalize our uniforms and show our character through them. I like to wear headbands, colored socks, different flats and skirts with mine. I also wear different jewelry.

Q: What are some of your favorite trends, and conversely, what trends do you hate?

A: I like sequin dresses because I like anything with bling. I like to spice up classic pieces by wearing metallic instead of neutrals. I tend to invest in simple pieces that I will wear every day and use for a long time, like the black pencil skirt I wear to work at Tidewater.

I hate it when people wear clothing that doesn't fit them or is not age appropriate.

Q: What is your style tip for aspiring fashionistas?

A: Look at new trends and incorporate them into your own style. Don't just buy the mannequin; get ideas and inspiration from it and make them your own. Own the style you have and be confident in what you're wearing.
