School sports can be pretty competitive, but what happens when siblings are added into the mix? Is the age-old rivalry between siblings really true? Sisters Mary Katherine and Libba Rollins discuss what it’s like to be on the same team with each other.

Mary Katherine and Libba have been swimming together for as long as they can remember. Mary Katherine is a senior at Charleston Catholic, and Libba a sophomore. Libba said that swimming with her sister was all she had ever known.

“I’m just so used to it [swimming with Mary Katherine],” she said. “We’ve been swimming together since we were very little.”

Mary Katherine pointed out one advantage of participating in the same sport: “It’s convenient to go to practice at the same time so only one trip [to the pool] needs to be made.”

Mary Katherine also said she is no more competitive with her sister than with any other teammate. Instead, she uses her sister to help keep her pace. The girls swim some of the same events, so they use each other to help themselves improve.

Mary Katherine and Libba don’t just swim together - last year, they ran track together, too. Libba, who loves running, persuaded Mary Katherine to run so they could spend more time together. However, it wasn’t quite the same as swimming together because Libba ran distance events and Mary Katherine ran sprints.

These two sibling teammates say they get along fairly well, even at home, which may be the reason why there’s no rivalry between them.

“Yeah, we are pretty close, and we don’t fight much,” said Libba.

Mary Katherine agreed. She even went as far as to say, “We are best friends.”
