Game called due to heat
When you play a football game, you can expect one of two outcomes. You either win or you lose. No one ever thinks the outcome of a football game will be decided by anything other than the end of the fourth quarter, but for the players from Van High School, our first game of the season ended in a way no one could predict.

Beyond the Highlight: Why an SEC team will win the national title
The Southeastern Conference is by far the most talented and toughest conference in Division I college football. The teams in both SEC divisions (East and West) continually beat up on each other, which results in difficulty finishing undefeated (an almost necessary pre-requisite to qualify for the Bowl Championship Series’ National Championship). However, more often than not an 11-1 or 10-2 SEC team is better than any other BCS conference team.

Crime and punishment: What sentence does Vick deserve?
Perhaps Michael Vick has finally found an opponent that will not allow him to scamper away untouched. In fact, it’s likely that Vick will lose a lot of ground in coming months.

Area swimmers beach-bound for national meet
This April, four area swimmers are taking an early spring break when they make their way to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. for the YMCA Short Course National Competition. Caitlin Cook, Katherine Crain, Travis Green and Evan Walker, all of whom swim for the Huntington Y Charleston Aquatics Team, have been training hard for the event.

Boarders hit the slopes
One of the thrills of winter is heading down the snowy slopes of ski resorts in the state, but some adventuresome athletes in the area prefer to do this on a snowboard rather than skis. With a season that begins around Thanksgiving and runs, weather allowing, through March, snowboarding is becoming a popular activity for teens. “There’s nothing like it. You have to try it for yourself to fully understand how amazing it is,” said Cabell Midland senior Brandon George.

Carly Patterson Invitational a success
Maverick Gymnastics Club was very busy the weekend of Dec. 9-11 when it hosted the Carly Patterson Big Dog Invitational at Riverside High School. Maverick, owned and run by Billy Bob Taylor, hosted approximately 500 gymnasts from West Virginia and surrounding states for the weekend competition.

Cheerleading not just for girls anymore
Cheerleading during our parents’ and grandparents’ high school years is drastically different from that of today. Then, cheerleaders did just what their title describes - they led cheers. Today, however, cheerleading involves much more.

Win gives squad a reason to cheer
In November, a spray-painted sheet bearing the message “16 New Girls, 2 New Coaches, 1 New Title...School History” greeted the Capital High School cheerleaders on the Monday they returned from the regional cheerleading championship. There, the group was crowned Class AAA Region 3 champion.
