Young teens will get a kick out of ‘Rules’

“Soccer Chick Rules” by Dawn FitzGerald immediately captures the reader’s attention. The first chapter opens with a descriptive scene from narrator Tess Munro’s soccer practice, and the action does not let up throughout the story. Preteen and teenage girls, especially those involved in sports of any kind, will take a special liking to this action.

However, this book doesn’t just focus on the game but also how Tess’s life revolves around it. When it becomes apparent that the local school levy may fail in its upcoming vote, she infuses the passion she has for soccer into campaigning to pass it. If the levy fails, local schools will lose extracurricular activities — including athletics.

Tess Munro is a role model for any girl who reads “Soccer Chick Rules.” She is a goal-oriented, dedicated, hard-nosed forward and captain of the Clarkstown Middle School soccer team. She befriends an unlikely acquaintance who is seen as inferior to her peers. And she stands up for what she believes in, taking risks to do the right thing.

Though from the outside “Soccer Chick Rules” looks like the typical drama-filled teen book, it’s surprisingly true to life and sensible. It is an action-packed and all-around enjoyable book that highlights friendship, teamwork, loyalty and creating and working towards goals. Girls ages 12-15 will especially appreciate all its genuine qualities.
