There is no doubt that Martina McBride can sing. She has had a successful 16-year career and sold millions of albums. She has numerous Top 5 hits and is tied with Reba Entire for the most CMA Female Vocalist of the Year wins (four).
Recently, McBride released "Live in Concert," a CD and DVD. Among the CD's eight songs are "Concrete Angel," "Anyway," "Independence Day" and a cover of Pat Benetar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."
The CD is really good, though it may not sound as good as a studio album. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing. In my opinion, her live version of "Whatever You Say" sounds better than the CD version.
Besides, Martina could sing any song I can't stand and make me love it.
The DVD contains concert performances of 20 songs, six of which are repeated from the CD. The other 14 include "Wild Angels," "My Baby Loves Me" and "How I Feel" as well as covers of "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden," "Over the Rainbow" and "Don't Stop Believin.'"
There are several songs from her latest album "Waking Up Laughing," too, including "How I Feel," "Anyway," "Trying to Find a Reason" and "For These Times." All of them sound just as good as they do on the album.
There are some amazing performances on this DVD. For example, the last five songs - "A Broken Wing," "Independence Day," "Don't Stop Believin,'" "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Over the Rainbow" - are unbelievable.
"A Broken Wing" was the best performance I've ever heard. She did amazing on it when I saw her in concert, but it was nothing compared to this. Martina makes Carrie Underwood (the second best singer ever - behind her, of course) look like an amateur.
Her performance of the song is a mile better than on the album version, and the crowd cheers for it for what seems like forever. Don't get me wrong. The other performances were great, but she definitely saved the best for last, starting with "A Broken Wing."
All in all, this is an awesome live CD/DVD. If you love Martina even half as much as I do, you will enjoy hearing her show off her amazing vocals in this concert package.
