Analyzing 'American Idol'

In case you live under a rock and haven't heard, David Cook is this year's American Idol. I've watched "American Idol" all but the first season, and every season's winner has been my favorite of the top two (except Fantasia in season three). Nothing changed this year.

For the final performance show on Tuesday, the first round songs were picked by Clive Davis, who discovered Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and many other big names in the music industry. He picked U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" for David C. and Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" for David A.

All of the judges liked David C.'s song, and I also enjoyed it a lot. David A.'s performance gave Paula the chills. I liked both songs about the same, so I can't pick a winner in that round.

In the next round, they chose a new song to sing, one that was selected from the "American Idol" songwriting contest. David C. sang a song called "Dream Big," and David A. sang "In This Moment." Randy, Paula and I liked David C.'s performance, but Simon didn't. Simon did like David A.'s, though, and I didn't.

In the third round, the contestants chose their songs. David C. went for a new song - Collective Soul's "The World I Know" - while David A. played it safe and sang "Imagine," a song that had earned him lots of praise earlier in the season.

David C. survived to win on luck, in my opinion, because his song wasn't that great. I don't think that you should get praise just for picking a new song as opposed to an old one. David A.'s repeat performance of "Imagine" was good. I gave that round to him.

So, in my opinion, the first round was a draw, David C. won round two and David A. won the third round. However, because David A.'s second song was so bad, I gave David C. a slight edge for the win.

The results show was entertaining, with performances by the top 12, Donna Summer, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Gladys Knight, Jordin Sparks, George Michaels, The Jonas Brothers, OneRepublic, Graham Nash, Seal and Carrie Underwood.

When the results were revealed, David Cook won with 56 percent of the votes, beating David Archuletta by about 12 million votes. Before the announcement, dialidol.com had predicted 52-57 percent of the vote for Cook and 43-48 percent for Archuletta, so things played out pretty much as predicted.

Overall, this "American Idol" season has been a good one. However, the final would have been amazing if Syesha or Carly had been there instead of Archie.
